Gravity a film by Alfonso Cuarón // Gravity un film di Alfonso Cuaron

ENGLISH:

“Gravity” is a movie directed by Alfonso Cuaron Orozco, in theatres October 2013
Acclaimed by the critics, the film opened during the “Mostra internazionale d'arte
cinematografica di Venezia” and won 7 Oscars in March 2014.
The story takes place in space, in a orbiting station where scientist Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) are doing some reparations. Suddently the station explodes because of a critical debris storm, and the two must think of a way to get back to Earth
The seemingly fanta-scientific film, actually goes beyond expectations of this genre. Instead, it looks like an allegory of life itself of the capability to revive and to cope with the grief that ties us up with our past, of the feelings that they lock up in time. Cuaron digs up in the intimacy of the soul and its hiding feelings in the space, so vast and yet so narrow and smothering.
Two things catch up our attention in this movie : the acting and the technical quality.
There was an excellent choice of actors , who among other things give their best because of the shots used: they are in fact used to frame the characters especially with
close-ups(used in in particular with  the female protagonis) In fact, being the dialogues
essentially limited , it is often with their expressions how you understand the
feelings and thoughts of the characters. Wide angle shots are used  not
only to show space in its vastness but also to emphasize the greatness
of the universe  in contrast with  the man, so small and scared in a place
who does not perceive as his  own. .It must be underlined  that Bullock’s performance ,and the faithful representation of the space are the result of a study on the
argument. As Cuaron himself said he  has asked  for the help of
engineers , astronauts and physicists to make  us perfectly conceive perception of the absence of the lack of gravity. Sandra Bullock has instead claimed to have had contact with an astronaut,
an acquaintance of hers  , to better understand the feeling of emptiness and even the deepest
reasons for this dangerous yet exciting job.
For what concerns the technique , then there are some fresh innovations : first
a use of " lightbox " , an advanced tool created
specifically for the film , which consists of a  six meters for three cube with almost two
million LED lights that allows to vary the brightness of the actors and to replicate
perfect color and nuances of space. This cube also allows
the actress  to have the feeling of being inside a space in total solitude ,
because the light does not allow her  to see outside, so that we can empathize even more with her.
The “Lightbox” is also not the only innovation, as  there are many other instruments for shooting created specifically for the movie  (those for the camera movements in particular are very innovative). Not less   spectacular the special effects applied to the shooting .And given the colossal work that lies behind this movie we can
say without hesitation that the Oscar for " Best Editing ", " Best Director " , "Best
photography "," Best Special Effects " ," best editor "and" Best Sound "
are absolutely more than deserved . If you then the absolutely flawlessly chosen music and songs
you can even agree with the Oscar given for " Best Soundtrack " !
A wide success for “Gravity”, especially because

A success on all fronts then to Gravity ! Especially because the search for
new means of expression is not carried too far in spite of the plot and  actually makes
the film even stronger even in this aspect, creating a wonderful
interweaving of images made ad hoc and a story that strikes deep .

Sandra Bullock
ITALIANO:

MOVIES:The Great Gatsby a film of Baz Luhrmann/ Il Grande Gatsby un Film di Baz Luhrmann

all rights are reserved to their respective owners ©

ENGLISH:

“The Great Gatsby” is a movie  directed by Baz Luhrmann that  started in cinemas in 2013, based on the homonymous novel by Francis Scott Fitzgerald.
The plot is essentially focused on the mysterious Mr. Gatsby (Leonardo Di Caprio) a young and wealthy man who organizes luxurious parties in his own mansion, but nobody seem to know anything s about him. Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) a young stockbroker is the one who actually tells us the story and how he got to meet  Mr. Gatsby. Nick moves to New York in 1922, he finds out to be Gatsby’s neighbor and even that his  own house is facing the one of a cousin of his, Daisy (Carey Mulligan) who lives on the other side of the bay with her rich husband, Tom Buchanan. The acquaintance with Gatsby will soon lead young Nick in the middle of series of events that will bring him to discover the whole truth about  his neighbor’s mysterious past.
From the very beginning of the movie there is a very strong bond of faithfulness with the novel, including dialogues strongly resembling those of the novel  (or even actually taken from it), especially in the first part of the movie. This contributes in making the film lacking mistakes and radical plot changes.
Every scene is particularly taken care of: with a very intense study on the 20’ies interior design and fashion (both winning an Oscar for “Best costumes” and “Best Scenography”) the movie stands between vividly coloured images during the most lively scenes, and more ethereal or even hazy ones during flashbacks.A feast of sounds, images and characters that get along well with Gatsby’s exaggerated  character.
In spite of all, this is exactly the biggest flaw of the movie! Even though there’s a great attention paid to details, as if it was a way to underline the greatness of the main character, there are quite a lot of moments where this aspect is way too exaggerated and becomes sort of out of place and distant from the context in which the story fits in.
First of all, the bad choice made for the movie soundtrack: Techno musicm hip.hop, rap…music generes that, in the 20’ies weren’t even listened..or, better said, never even existed! The attempt to create a story with modern references is clear (for example, the party scenes that immediately make us think about present days disco parties). An interesting but way too bold idea, that doesn’t work, especially because of the plot, too bound with the historical period. This is utter nonsense.
Still concerning a parallelism with Fitzgerald’s masterpiece, in spite of a perfect depiction of dialogue, setting, costumes etc, the movie transforms Nick (who is supposed to be the main character) in a mere secondary character. On second thought maybe he isn’t even a secnd character: he is as useful as  Gatsby’s mansion wallpaper! The character (who has a life of his own in the novel, with interests, personal thoughts etc) just “tells” Gatsby’s story, without any particular characterization.

ITALIANO:

MOVIES: Review "Her" a film of Spike Jonze / Recensione "Lei" un film di Spike Jonze

all rights are reserved to their respective owners ©

ENGLISH
“LOVE AT THE TIME OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE”

Director Spike Jonze shows us how tecnolgoy can substitute the human being not only in practical and working functions, but also in emotional/sentimental ones in his new movie called “Her”.
Our main character, Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) lives in a futuristic L.A  and works as a “writer” for a firm that creates and sends all kinds of letters, addressed to other people by relatives or friends request.Theodore can’t accept the fact that his marriage with Catherine (Rooney Mara) is falling apart and he can’t even put his signature on divorce paper, nonetheless he can’t let go of his memories with his wife. His one and only friend is Amy 8Amy Adams), his neighbor and long-time friend. Theodore will eventually find how to lift up his life, thanks to the invention of “OS1” a sophisticated operative system based on an artificial intelligence called Samantha, who seems to be perfect for him. Theodore will build a strong bond with her and he will eventually fall in love with her.
This will come to and end when Theodore will find out that his love, represented by Samantha, is actually simultaneously connected with 8316 users and that she’s in love with 641 more. What Theodore had built was just a conforting lie, and alternative to human exisctence and his weakness and flaws from which he will have to detach once and for all.
With Samantha gone, he falls back into his initial emptiness, an emptiness hard to fulfill but that will bring him to get close to other human beings, especially Amy, his neighbor.
By using a technology-enslaved society as background, Spike Jonze tells usa non.conventional but artificial love story, stimulating the viewer’s fantasy, by challenging him to imagine how Samantha looks like (Samantha’s voice is provided by Scarlett Johansson in the original version).
In the movie, relationships between men and technology  seem to acquire more humanelike character, whilst relationships between men are somewhat colder and quicker: nobody speak to each other in the streets, nobody seems to be interested in developing interpersonal relationships, but they prefer to build a proper relationship with their own OS (Let’s just think about Olivia Wilde’s scene in the movie).
Everything is put to the edge until the moment when the characters lose contact with reality, ending up with being incapable of telling the difference between what’s real and what’s artificial, leaving them in a deep solitude of which they’re not even aware of.
This all technology’s fault, the technology that entered abruptly not only in our houses but in our feelings as well. Human relationships undergo a drastic changing, by becoming incredibly frail, almost empty. Technology can comfort us, by substituting those natural “flaws” which belong to human relationships. An almost prophetical Jonze shows us a future or, better said, the future  of humane feelings that seem to find comfort only in technology.
A flawless screenplay (Oscar for best original screenplay), the dialogues between Theodore and Samantha are touching and sweet. Phoenix’s interpretation  of the disenchanted Theodore, trying to find his own  balance, and the photography is very bright.

It’s a shame that the movie finale is way too conventional, in spite of the excellent premises.

ITALIANO:
